FAQ
Questions we hear before the first show.
If yours isn't here, it goes straight to a person — not a bot — on the contact page.
What exactly is Side Door?
A platform that matches independent musicians with people willing to host a show in their space — living rooms, backyards, shops after hours, and everything in between. We handle the matching, the guest list, and the door price so both sides can focus on the night itself.
Is it safe to let strangers into my home?
Every artist profile goes through a review before it's searchable, and your exact address is only shared with guests after their RSVP is confirmed and paid — never before. You also set the guest cap, so your space is never oversold.
What kind of space actually qualifies as a host space?
If people can sit or stand comfortably and hear a song without shouting over something else, it qualifies. Living rooms, garages, backyards, bookstores, breweries on a slow night, and rooftop decks have all worked. You don't need a stage or a sound system — the listing describes exactly what your space has.
Does my music have to be a certain genre?
No. Hosts list the kind of night they want, and search matches on genre, energy, and set size — quiet and acoustic, full-band and loud, spoken word, all of it. The goal is a good fit for the room, not a specific sound.
How much does it cost to join?
Building a profile, browsing matches, and getting reviewed is free for both artists and hosts. A small fee applies only once a show is booked and tickets are sold — see the pricing page for details.
My city isn't listed — can I still apply?
Yes. We're opening access city by city, but applications are open everywhere. Applying is also the fastest way to find out when your area opens.
Can I be both an artist and a host?
Absolutely — plenty of people are both. You can hold an artist profile and a host profile at the same time under one account.
What if a show doesn't sell any seats?
Since the door price fee only applies to seats that actually sell, a quiet show doesn't cost either side anything beyond the time. Most hosts and artists agree on a minimum guest count before confirming a date, for exactly this reason.
Who handles the money?
Guests pay their door price when they RSVP. Payout details to the artist and any host share are set as part of confirming the show, before the date is locked in.
Is alcohol allowed at a Side Door show?
That's entirely the host's call, and it's part of the house rules shown on every listing before anyone books — BYO, dry, or somewhere in between.
